The Different But Equal Awards were organised by the Children, Young People and Families Consortium at The Carlton Park Hotel.

The wide range of awards included best team player, the person most likely to make people smile, the most inspiring person and two “superstar” awards.

There was a highly commended and a winner in each category and the young people receiving their awards from the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Rose Keenan, came from a range of organisations, including Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Hilltop School, Rotherham Youth Cabinet, Clifton Learning Partnership, Barnardo’s, Chat N Chill, the Parents and Carers Forum, the United Multicultural Centre and the Different But Equal Board.

The judges were Ian Thomas, director of children’s services at Rotherham Borough Council; Ashley Gregory, formerly of the Youth Parliament and Janet Wheatley, chief executive of Voluntary Action Rotherham.

Ms Wheatley said: “To see all the young people and their awards was really quite inspiring and humbling.”

The Different But Equal Board was formed at the start of last year to help children and young people have a voice in planning and decision-making in Rotherham.

Among the highlights of the last year was a conference at the Carlton Park Hotel in July, which was attended by over 100 young people and gave those from different parts of the borough, from different backgrounds and identities, the chance to come together and discuss issues that affect them all.
