Emily Kettell, who has spent the last seven years studying at Swinton Academy, was named Post-16 Student of the Year at the annual Aston Community Education Trust (ACET) awards.

The 18-year-old will leave Swinton to join the University of York later this year — but could have had her pick of top universities in the country with the Russell Group of universities, who include the University of Nottingham and the University of Warwick, lowering their entry grades to secure Emily as a student.

Head girl Emily has been at Swinton Academy since the age of 11 and opted to stay with the Rotherham school to study her A-levels.

Swinton Academy principal, Rebecca Hibberd, said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to offer our students the opportunity to continue their studies post-16.

“We’re immensely proud of the young adults whom we serve in Year 12 and 13 with many going on to university or higher-level apprenticeships.

“Emily is a highly valued and respected member of the community and has pursued her studies with her goal of becoming a barrister.

“She’s passionate about law and thoroughly enjoyed her self-organised work experience and speaks enthusiastically about the thrill of watching a court in session from the public gallery.

“She’s determined, hard-working and an exceptional young woman. Emily is highly articulate and we believe she'll make an excellent barrister.”
