The group voted to give Mark McGrail the Stan Crowther Environment Award for his efforts on the George Wright building - which opened to guests this week just off High Street - and for his work on 1915 Bar.

The award — named after the late Rotherham MP and heritage campaigner — is given for the architectural treatment of a new building or refurbishment.

Society secretary Peter Hawkridge said: “Mark is a local businessman who is showing the way forward for the town centre.

“The days of the big retail outlets have gone and a new vision is required, with smaller, niche shopping outlets, leisure and entertainment, food and drink, drawing people together.

“Mark is investing his own money, time and effort in this enterprise and this Society is pleased to offer its support.

“The 1915 Bar and the George Wright Boutique Hotel are excellent examples of the way forward and we wish them every success.”

Mark was presented with the award on Tuesday after the society’s AGM.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s great for us to already have an award to put on the wall after all the effort that’s gone into the building.”
