Award for "Dr Ted" volunteers as Rotherham Hospital celebrates its heroes

THE unsung heroes honoured at  Rotherham Hospital’s celebration of its outstanding staff and volunteers included a doctor who went above and beyond, a stunned senior sister and the men behind the friendly face of Dr Ted.

The joint winners of the outstanding volunteer accolade at the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s Proud Awards were Andrew Moore (26) and John Lepski (67), who entertain patients as hospital charity mascot, Dr Ted.

Andrew of Lathe Road, Whiston, said he felt “very overwhelmed” by the win.

John of Fenton Way, Kimberworth, said winning the award was “brilliant”, adding that he volunteers for the children Dr Ted entertains.

Eighteen awards were handed out at a grand ceremony at Magna on Friday, hosted by Heart Radio DJ “Dixie”, recognising staff and teams across the hospital trust.

Dr Binu Varughese (45) was chosen for the public recognition award — for which nominees are put forward by Advertiser readers — for his care of patient John Geoghegan.

Dr Varughese said it was “amazing” to be honoured but added: “What it comes down to is teamwork and I think I have won it for my team.”
