Cllr Stringer, along with family and friends, began raising funds for the society as a way of saying thank you for the help that they have given his 13-year-old grandson, Joe, who has Asperger's Syndrome.

He said:"Over the last few years my family have been very fortunate in obtaining help, advice, patience and understanding from the National Autistic Society (NAS).

"In recognition of the help that this society gives not only to us but to many other families too, we decided to go out and raise funds for them.

"We aimed for £1,000 but we are very fortunate to announce that we are very close indeed to £2,000.

"Because of this success we have arranged a presentation night when the funds will be presented to NAS officials."

The event will take place on December 11 at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall in Maltby.

Tickets are £5 which includes pie and peas. There will also be a raffle and all money raised will be presented to the NAS.
