The unit has recently been repainted leaving the ward’s four rooms, family rooms, central corridor and entrance a blank canvas for artists to leave their mark.

Alison Cowie, matron for children’s acute and complex care, said: “We know that it can be a very anxious time for parents whose babies are being cared for on our Special Care Baby Unit.

“We want our youngest and most vulnerable patients to have the best possible start in life and we work incredibly hard to care not just for the new-borns but their parents and siblings too by providing a calming environment.

“We’re delighted our ward has been given a fresh coat of paint but we’re very much looking forward to a local artist or illustrator adding their creative flair to make it look beautiful, colourful and to feel relaxing and therapeutic.”

The charity is looking for a traditional, picturesque-theme based on nature. The illustrations, whether inspired by the seasons, seaside or countryside, preferably need to flow around the individual bays, through the family rooms and along the corridor to tell a story.

Artists will need to work around existing equipment and cots as there are no full wall areas available. Any paints or materials used must be lead-free and easy to clean. Artwork on canvas or which includes fabric or extra materials, are not acceptable. The successful artist/illustrator will need to work with colleagues on the ward to minimise disruption and to adhere to infection control practices.

One artist or illustrator will be commissioned to carry out the work, funded by the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity. All interested parties will need to submit an application form to the charity.

The deadline for all submissions is 5pm on October 26. A shortlist will then be selected by the charity and colleagues on the Special Care Baby Unit with successful candidates invited to visit the ward in early November.
