Arrest after man (68) dies in Mexborough collision

POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a collision in Mexborough on Saturday which killed a pensioner.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and information following the collision on Greens Way, opposite Mexborough Railway Station, at 5.25pm.

A black BMW which was travelling from the direction of Swinton, collided with a pedestrian who was crossing Greens Way from the side of the railway station towards the town centre, a police spokeswoman said.

The pedestrian, a 68-year-old man from Mexborough, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family are being supported by specially trained officers, the spokeswoman added.

The driver of the BMW, a 22-year-old man from Mexborough, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, who may have seen the driving manner of the vehicle prior to the collision, or who may have any information that can help with enquiries.
