Appeal after shopkeeper sprayed with 'unknown substance'

POLICE are appealing for information after an attempted robbery at a convenience store.

Two men went into the Mini Mart in Goldthorpe on Sunday, January 24, walked up to the counter and sprayed an unknown substance into the shopkeeper's face, a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said.

The men then hit their victim over the head with a bottle before leaving empty-handed, she added.

Investigating officer Lauren Fletcher said: “This incident happened at around 6.55pm and we’re keen to hear from anyone in Goldthorpe who might have seen what happened.

“This was a really upsetting attack on someone who was just doing their day job in a local shop, and we’re determined to trace those responsible.

"The shopkeeper, whilst not seriously injured, was left very distressed by what happened.

“As part of our enquiries, we’re releasing CCTV images of two men we’d like to speak to in connection with our investigation.

"If you recognise them, or have any information about what happened, please do contact us.”
