COUNCIL bosses have come under fire over the state of Rotherham’s roads during one of the chilliest winters for years.

Conservative councillor Martyn Parker accused the ruling Labour group of not being quick enough in repairing the weather-damaged roads.

Cllr Parker said: “Having witnessed the work and seeing nothing more than tapping the roads down with a shovel, do you consider this to be an appropriate measure?

“This only makes the roads even more dangerous for vehicles travelling over them.”

The council’s Cabinet member for Streetpride, Cllr Richard Russell, defended the council’s work on the weather-hit roads.

“The general condition of the roads is as good as those in any of our neighbouring authorities’ areas,” he said.

“The weather this year has been exceptional and is not something that is normal.

“I was speaking to a lady who was complaining of one of her roads being particularly damaged. There was someone there within just hours repairing it and I would like to commend Streetpride for what they did in the testing circumstances that we had.”

He added; “Rotherham's roads are the best in this whole area and we should be thankful of that.”
