The A6123 Aldwarke Lane near Parkgate has been closed since around 12.50pm yesterday.

The smash dislodged three coping stones in the railway bridge's arch, which could later be seen by the roadside.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: "Repair works have been done on the bridge and we are currently waiting for the concrete to set before the road can be re-opened."

The spokeswoman added an inspection is due to take place this morning and the road would be closed until further notice.

"Trains are running over the affected bridge at reduced speed, so there may be a slight knock-on effect to journey times," she said.
