Acid spill scare at South Yorkshire M1 service station

A PROTECTIVE cordon has been set up after 4,000 litres of nitric acid were spilled at a service station on the M1.

A PROTECTIVE cordon has been set up after 4,000 litres of nitric acid were spilled at a service station on the M in South Yorkshire.

Firefighters evacuated the car park at Woodall Services, between junctions 30 and 31,  before setting up a 50 metre cordon after they were called to the spillage at around 9.25am this morning.

The acid had leaked from a lorry carrying four containers of the potentially harmful substance.

Four fire engines initially attended the incident but three were withdrawn as emergency services awaited a specialist clean-up team to come come and deal with the issue.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “Precautions have been taken and the risk to the public is minimal but the job of clearing the spillage will now fall to a team of professionals.”
