Academy lift county crown

FOOTBALLING scholars from a sporty school have had a fantastic first season together.

The teenagers from Maltby Academy's scholarship programme won the English Colleges FA Yorkshire and Humberside Division with two games to spare.

Run in tandem with Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club, the programme offers 16-18 year-olds an achievable and realistic pathway into semi-professional football while studying at the school.

The lads access high-quality football provision working with coaches who have previously and currently coach/played within the professional game.

Coaches Matt Higgins and Ian Breckin, the former Rotherham United player, are delighted with progress. The team won all eight of its opening league fixtures.

Matt said: "The boys have done wonderfully in their first season, the early signs have been been very positive.

"The players have developed massively over the season and this can only be beneficial to the scholarship, Maltby Academy and Sheffield FC. A number have signed forms with the club.
