AN ABUSIVE man who told his ex-wife he would hire an assassin to kill her has been jailed for 21 months.
Asaf Ali (35), of Moorgate Road, Rotherham, was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court today (Tuesday) and was banned from contacting his ex-wife for five years.
Prosecutor Ms Hannah Walker said Ali had turned up at the hairdressing salon where his ex-wife worked last September and shouted at her repeatedly.
Police arrested and bailed Ali on the condition that he stopped contacting her but days later he called her at least 20 times from a private number.
Ali threatened to kill her by hiring an assassin from Birmingham, Ms Walker said.
He also made threats of a sexual nature and continued to make abusive phone calls to her.
Ali admitted a count of harassment, by putting a person in fear of violence, at a previous hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.
Sentencing Ali, Judge Sarah Wright said: “Over several days in September last year you threatened your former partner, both in person and over the phone, and continued to abuse, harass and threaten both her and her family with violence, threatening to rape and kill her — all designed to belittle and humiliate her, even after being arrested and bailed with conditions not to contact her.”
