WORK has started on an £860,000 extension at a community education centre which will be the home of a photography studio and computer suite.

The new facility will be based at the Rawmarsh City Learning Centre (CLC) which provides a variety of learning opportunities for school pupils, adults and teachers across the north of Rotherham.

As well as the multi-functional media studio, the new centre will feature a digital studio and 12 unit ICT suite and the work is expected to be completed by next May.

The project has been supported by a £600,000 grant from the borough council's Targeted Capital Fund, £200,000 from the CLC itself and £60,000 from Rawmarsh Community School.

Cllr Shaun Wright, cabinet member for Children and Young People's Services, said: "This centre in Rawmarsh has been hugely successful and has benefited so many people.

"Ensuring that we open up opportunities for people to get access to new technology and to learn about it is key to meeting the needs of the future economy.

"It is great to be able to support these new facilities."

Centre manager Trish Sharp said: "This is a really exciting time for the centre. Over the coming years we hope to use these new facilities to discover and nurture the creative talent of people of all ages from across Rotherham."

Rawmarsh CLC will also play a key role in Rotherham's Building Schools for the Future programme, by helping to lead the delivery of teacher training in the use of ICT.
