£8.5m railway station 'could be left unmanned' VOTE

ROTHERHAM'S refurbished railway station could be left without a manned ticket office under plans to save money.

Rail chiefs are spending £8.5m on doing up the station, but it was revealed by the TSSA rail union this week that it is on a hit list of 675 stations that could be left unmanned.

The TSSA said that one in four railway ticket offices in England and Wales could close under recommendations “buried” in the small print of a Government-commissioned report.

The list appears in a report drawn up by Sir Roy McNulty on how to achieve savings in the railway industry, but it was not published in the executive summary.

TSSA officials discovered the recommendation when they read the full report, which ran to hundreds of pages.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport said: “We are considering the findings of Sir Roy McNulty’s independent report and any of his proposed changes to rail fares or ticketing will be examined as part of a government review.
