£40,000 Rotherham jewellery raid: three arrested

THREE suspected members of a gang who stole £40,000 worth of jewellery in a raid at a Rotherham shop have been arrested by police.

Two men, aged 38 and 30, and a 28-year-old woman, all from the Leeds area, were arrested for alleged burglary after information from members of the public.

Raiders smashed their way in through the roof of The Gold Den jewellers and Lionel’s Watch Shop, which share premises in the Riverside Precinct in Rotherham town centre, between 1.45am and 2.30am on Good Friday.

Stolen were gold chains, bracelets, rings and earrings from the Gold Den and several high-value watches from Lionel’s.

Around £1,000 worth of stolen jewellery has been recovered from a pawnbrokers in Leeds.

The three suspects have been bailed pending further inquiries.

A 27-year-old man from Swinton who had earlier been arrested on suspicion of burglary is to be released without charge.

Police would still like to appeal for help with their investigation.

A considerable amount of jewellery is still missing, including the Rotherham United branded goods.
