£19.4m boost for Rotherham to Sheffield bus route

Transport Secretary Justine Greening has announced that the Bus Rapid Transit scheme, which will provide a faster bus link between Rotherham and Sheffield, is being handed the sum as part of £854 million of investment in public transport initiatives across the UK.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Sheffield City Council and Rotherham Borough Council have teamed up create plans for the £34 million BRT scheme.

It will see a fleet of new low-emission buses travelling between the town and the city on a route with limited stops and priority at key junctions along the way.

The BRT’s North Route will pass through the Wicker, Attercliffe, Carbrook, Meadowhall and Templeborough and will make use of a new link road under the M1 at Tinsley which will be developed when work gets underway in 2014.

The BRT’s South Route will be a dedicated public transport system for the residents of Canklow, Brinsworth and Waverley and will see the widening of roads in certain places and the creation of a park and ride facility, with 1,000 parking spaces at Waverley.
