SEVERAL motorists were taken to hospital 18 after a 12-car motorway pile-up which left traffic at a standstill for almost two hours.
Police and firefighters attended the incident between junction one and two of the M18 westbound shortly after 4pm yesterday.
Among the casualties rushed to hospital were two men in their 40s suffering from head and spinal injuries, and a 19-year-old girl with whiplash injuries.
A horsebox was also among the vehicles involved.
A fire brigade spokesman said: “Although we did not have to cut anyone from their vehicles this was a major incident due to the number of vehicles involved and the number of casualties that resulted.
“The M18 was closed for a significant amount of time following the incident, causing significant disruption.”
