1,000 South Yorkshire police jobs face axe, warning

SOUTH Yorkshire Police will have to slash more than 1,000 jobs overall in an effort to meet £43 million of budget cuts demanded by the Government, a new report has revealed.

Despite already axing 600 jobs since March 2010, another 400 jobs will have to be shed by 2015, according to details revealed in the Policing in Austerity: One Year On report compiled by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Police chiefs have already managed to trim £15 million of the £43 million they need to slash from their budget, but deeper cuts are required in the coming years.

The HMIC report states that 330 of the SYP jobs to be cut by the next General Election will be police officer posts—an 11 per cent reduction—with 700 civilian positions also earmarked for the axe.

Up to 13 police station front counters could be lost as part of the measures.

Despite the cuts, the HMIC report records that recorded crime levels dropped by two per cent between December 2010 and December 2011.

Roger Baker, Inspector of Constabulary for the northern region, said: “South Yorkshire Police has put in place a comprehensive change programme to manage the reductions in its budget.

“As a result they are in a good position to achieve their savings target by March 2015.”
