VIDEO: Efforts to honour football pioneer Arthur Wharton

A TRIBUTE project celebrating pioneering footballer Arthur Wharton was launched at New York Stadium.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Arthur becoming the first black professional footballer when he signed for Rotherham Town in 1989.

Plans for a statue to be erected outside New York were unveiled by businessman Jim Cadman.

The launch event was attended by ex-footballers Cyrille Regis and Alex Stepney and members of Arthur’s family.
