Veteran Dennis' recognition for his work with servicemen

A VETERAN who helped set up a group to support others who have served in the forces has been presented with an award.

Dennis Hardy, who served in the Royal Artillery, has been involved with veterans’ support group Military Community Veterans’ Centre for three years.

He was presented with a “certificate of appreciation” by Rotherham MP Sarah Champion who visited the centre on Friday.

Mr Hardy (71) said: “The award means a great deal because I never got involved to be recognised.

“I wanted to give something back and offer some help to the soldiers. When I left the forces there was help at the dole office and I was back at work the next week.

“Nowadays, there are a lot of soldiers who are getting finished and are going down the wrong path.

“I wanted to get involved and support them and give something back.”

Mr Hardy, of East Herringthorpe, served from 1962 to 1969 at Larkhill, Wiltshire.

As part of his work with MCVC he transports the group’s trailer to events and galas.

MCVC meets every Friday morning at Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR) in Coke Hill and offers support to the town’s ex-servicemen and women.

It is also looking for more volunteers to help with promoting the group on a trailer which tours the borough.
