"Vandals throwing bricks at buses and cars"

A MUM described how she and her baby were showered in glass when yobs threw a brick through a bus window.

Amy Russell (23) was travelling home in Maltby with her partner and 12-week-old son when the incident happened.

She said: “We heard a massive smash and then we were covered in glass. They knew what they were doing.

“It was a brick that they threw and they waited until the bus was pulling in so it wasn’t going at a fast speed.”

The incident happened on High Street, near to the Queens crossroads, at about 5pm on Sunday (20).

Bus operator First withdrew the X1 service from Maltby’s Model Village area last Friday evening because of youths throwing stones at vehicles.

“It needs to stop,” added Amy. “It’s happening all the time, not just to buses but to people in their cars too. This one wasn’t even at a daft time late at night, it was just tea time.”

First business manager Paul Flanagan said: “We would like to reassure customers that we are treating these incidents very seriously, and the safety of our customers and drivers is of the utmost importance.

“Not only are acts of vandalism dangerous for our drivers and customers, but they also cause significant disruption to timetable arrangements, due to damaged buses having to be withdrawn.

“In recent cases where a bus needs to be withdrawn, we aim to source a replacement bus as quickly as possible, in order to minimise disruption to our customers.

“But when vandalism does occur while the bus is in service, then it does inevitably and regrettably result in at least part of that scheduled journey being lost.”
