Bikers across South Yorkshire are being encouraged to bring out their motorcycles and commute to work as part of the Ride to Work Day to raise awareness and promote the benefits associated with biking.

Time savings, less congestion and reduced travel costs all contribute towards making riders happier commuters, the SRP said.

During the week, young and newly-qualified riders will be offered free high-visibility vests, advice and information to help keep riders safer on the roads.

The SRP Motorcycle collision reduction officers can provide safety sessions and presentations to local groups or on a one to one basis.

Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads education manager from the South Yorkshire SRP said: “More people are using two wheels as a means of transport all year round, particularly as a way of saving money.

“However, we want to make sure that increased powered two wheel usage does not result in more riders being involved in road traffic collisions.

“Always make yourself as conspicuous as possible by wearing high-vis clothing.

“Also, riders should consider where they are in relation to other vehicle's blind spots.

These actions could make the difference between being seen or being involved in a collision.

Drivers also have a responsibility to look out for smaller vehicles such as scooters and motorcycles.”

The South Yorkshire SRP is also subsidising a two-day SharpRider training course for motorcyclists.

Places are still available on the course to be held on July 6 at Edlington Fire Station.
