Tributes paid to "real gentleman" Peter Broxham

TOUCHING tributes have been paid to former Voluntary Action Rotherham chairman Peter Broxham, whose death “leaves a huge gap” for charities across the town.

Mr Broxham - who was also a keen member of the Round Table and then Rother Vale 41 Club - died on September 2 at the age of 75 following a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

He had served nine years as VAR chairman and was still an active member of its board of trustees at the time of his death.

Janet Wheatley, chief executive officer of VAR, said: “Peter’s death will leave a huge gap for the many local charities that he actively supported.

“For more than 30 years, Peter has been an active supporter, friend and trustee of many local groups.

“He was determined never to be defined by his illness. He was a real gentleman who was passionate and supportive of the voluntary and community sector.

“He was always willing to help out and provide advice, support and encouragement whenever it was needed.”

Former steelworker Peter had to retire from British Steel in 1981 before going into the voluntary sector.

Margaret Oldfield, VAR chairman, said: “Peter was always keen to give back to the community and worked tirelessly, never once complaining or expressing frustration at the challenges he faced daily.

“He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and so many in the voluntary and community sector as a whole but he has left us with many happy and fond memories.

“We at VAR, many other voluntary organisations, and Rotherham as a whole, owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.

“It has been our privilege and pleasure in having known and been associated with Peter for so many years.”
