Tributes paid after stalwart Fred dies

TRIBUTES have been paid to one of local football’s leading servants, who died last week.

Fred Powell, who was 75, served for many years as chairman of the Rotherham Charity Cup, a member of the Rotherham and District Football Association, County Senior League Committee and was a Council Member of the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA.

Fred was also was the gateman at Parkgate FC.

Rotherham Sunday League secretary Pam Gabbitas led the trubites, saying: “"Fred was a true gentleman, one from the old school.

“He was a lifeblood of local football and would help anybody. It didn't matter if it was a top team or a bottom team. He will be sadly missed."

The funeral service will be held at Bramley Church next Friday (11am) followed at noon noon by the committal at the Rotherham Crematorium.

Fred’s family have asked for no flowers but donations are welcome for the FA and British Heart Foundation Defibrillation Fund for use in the Rotherham and Sheffield area.
