Tribute to school sports stalwart

TRIBUTES have been paid to one of the stalwarts of Rotherham school sports, who died last week aged 85.

Ken Knowles had been a key man in the town’s Schools Sports Association and also with Rotherham Boys for over two decades. He died recently in Moorgate Lodge Nursing Home.

Ken earned the MBE for his services to school sport in 1982, having first become involved when he started teaching at Ferham in 1946.

He became manager of the Boys team in 1970 and was also chairman of both the Boys and the School Sports Association.

Rotherham United director Brian Chapple worked alongside Ken for many years.

He said: “Ken was one of those old-fashioned teachers who recognised the value of sport when it came to pushing children along.

“He was a prominant figure in Rotherham school sports for many years, was highly influential andf worked very hard alongside people like Brian Copley to develop and nurture local talent.”
