Work starts on new link road

WORK is now underway on a new link road aiming to reduce bus journey times between Rotherham and Sheffield.

The new road will divert buses which are part of the forthcoming Bus Rapid Transit Scheme away from potential traffic bottlenecks at junction 34 of the M1, at Tinsley — taking them beneath the iconic double-decker viaduct.

Its creation comes as part of the £30 million scheme to create a more efficient transport link between Rotherham and the city which is designed to boost the economy of the Lower Don Valley.

Funding of £15.4 million from the Department of Transport was agreed for the link road last year, with a further £8.1 million made available from Europe.
