Restrictions possible to sort out HGV lay-by parking problem

PARKING restrictions could be introduced on Herringthorpe Valley Road after complaints about HGV drivers leaving vehicles on lay-bys overnight.

Cllr Joanna Baker-Rogers, Dalton & Thrybergh ward on RMBC, said: “In recent weeks, articulated lorries have frequently been parking, for up to four days.

“These lorries present a hazard to pedestrians and other road users, make bin collections difficult and, most importantly, reduce access for emergency vehicles.”

Cllr Dominic Beck, cabinet member for transport, said: “We are aware and have had reports about the parking overnight in lay-bys.

“At the moment, we are unable to take enforcement action because it’s an unrestricted area. We don’t have the powers to enforce.”

Cllr Beck told last week’s full council meeting that he had asked RMBC officers to work with Cllr Baker-Rogers on finding the best solution.

“This may involve introducing restrictions in that location,” he added.
