Do the right thing and keep airport open, urges union

TRADE union workers took part in a protest against the closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport and urged operators to “do the right thing” by remaining open and saving jobs.

GMB Yorkshire — who represent workers at the airport — rallied outside DSA with South Yorkshire politicians and union representatives to save 2,700 direct and indirect workers who will lose their jobs, according to Doncaster mayor Ros Jones.

Ms Jones and South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said owners Peel were in “crunch talks” with interested parties which could see the airport stay open.

Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband, Mr Coppard and Mrs Jones showed their support to workers at the march but Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher did not attend.

Ms Jones said: “These potential buyers will not work to Peel’s timeline, they would each need to undertake their own due-diligence before putting a final offer to Peel, this could be achieved within six to 12 months.

“So it is vital that Peel accept our offer of financial bridging support for up to 24 months.”

Mr Fletcher has called on Mr Coppard to use his devolved powers to save DSA from closure.
