Town pays tribute to war dead

Rotherham paused today to remember the fallen as part of a series of events to remember the town's war dead.

Hundreds of shoppers and workers stood in silence at 11am to mark Armistice Day.

Rotherham’s own acts of remembrance got under way when the The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, was part of a gathering which observed a two-minute silence in All Saints’ Square.

The town will hold its own annual Remembrance Day parade on Sunday.

Starting from Effingham Street at 9.25am, the parade will make its way to Rotherham Minster where a special service, conducted by the Canon Rev David Bliss, will take place at 9.45am.

Poppies will be worn around the borough to mark Remembrance Sunday at a series of events this weekend.

Here is a guide to some of the events that might be taking place near you:

qBramley and Hellaby: A procession to the Bramley Memorial, on Cross Street, will begin at St Francis’ Church at 10.45am, ahead of an service of remembrance.

qDinnington: A Remembrance Sunday parade will march to the War Memorial in Coronation Park for a short service at 10.45am. The Parade will then march to St Leonard’s Church for a Service of Remembrance. On completion of the Remembrance Service, the Parade will march down Barleycroft Lane where the Salute will be taken by the Chairman of the Town Council.

qThrybergh and Dalton: A service at St Leonard’s church at 9.30am will be followed by an act of Remembrance at the Parish Hall at 10.45am.

qThurcroft: A Remembrance Day parade will leave St Simon and St Jude’s Parish Church at 10.45am, accompanied by Thurcroft Welfare Band, to the war memorial for a service at 10.55am, followed by the two minutes’ silence at 11am.

qWales: A Remembrance Sunday service at Wales St John’s Church at 10.45am will be followed by wreath-laying at the war memorial in Wales Square, at 11.45am.

qWickersley: A remembrance service at the war memorial on Morthen Road will be led by the ministers from all three Wickersley churches at midday.

qWhiston: Whiston Brass Band will lead a parade from Sitwell Car Park to the Methodist Church for a remembrance service at 9.45am. The parade will march up to the Lych Gate for laying of wreaths and the minute’s silence.
