Tips to keep cyclists rolling on snowy roads

ROTHERHAM cyclists are being urged to fit special tyres if they plan to keep pedalling through the snow.

Cycling cooperative Pedal Ready also urged riders heading out in wintry weather to ensure they wrap up in plenty of layers and take food and water with them.

Group member Carl Beresford said: “Generally, cycling is often an easier way to get about than driving in wintry conditions since you can always get off and walk for a while.

“Many cyclists just walk to the main road then cycle from there.

“Off-road tyres, and letting a little air out, might give you better grip.

“Also, remember to take food and waterproofs, and wear layers rather than a thick coat that will limit your movement.

Pedal Ready’s tips include:

  1. Brake slowly and carefully. Use the back brake mainly, especially going downhill.
  2. Steer as much as possible with your body, only use handlebars gently and gradually - and try not to brake sharply while you do it.
  3. Gauge the surface — snow is usually OK but ice is always tricky, especially if you steer or brake sharply, while slush can be bumpy and unpredictable. Get off and walk for a while if you're in any doubt.
  4. Keep your weight back and stay relaxed.
  5. Watch for grooves caused by car tyres — these can be less slippy but moving in and out of a slushy groove can be difficult. Take your time and try and make sure following drivers see you and give you space.
