Thurnscoe head teacher awarded New Year’s honour

A SCHOOL leader awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List has praised the team around her for their “tremendous commitment” to helping young people.

Sarah Creighton (59) is the executive principal at The Hill Primary Academy and Gooseacre Primary Academy in Thurnscoe as well as Littleworth Grange Primary Academy in Barnsley.

The stunned mum-of-three said she had “absolutely no idea” why she had been nominated and paid tribute to staff, pupils and parents at all three schools for their contribution toward the prestigious accolade for “services to education”.

“I found out about the OBE in mid-November but had to keep it a secret which was really difficult, especially over Christmas,” she said.

“We got there in the end and everyone was delighted for me which was really nice.

“But these awards are not about individuals, this OBE recognises all the fantastic people I work with from teaching and support staff to parents, children and their communities.

“It’s an award for all of us.”
