A YOUTH theatre group is celebrating its first birthday by inviting new members to audition for this year’s production.

Steps Productions, launched by Ash White last January, is open to nine to 19-year-olds interested in acting, singing and dance.

The 19-year-old, who over the last ten years has performed in more than 30 musicals, pantomimes and variety shows, decided to take the next step by setting up his own group.

And the Kimberworth teenager is looking forward to directing and producing Steps' second major production, Boogie Nights, at the Civic Theatre on June 14 and June 15.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 12 months. As well as our first production, which told the story of of a young performer and his battle with bone cancer, we have also performed for elderly residents and young people in care, which was a very, very inspirational process.

“Our next production, Boogie Nights is an adapted version of the stage musical which is suitable for all young people.”

He added: “Steps Productions gives opportunities to people who have so much potential and talent.

“One of the best things is the rewarding process of seeing young people develop their confidence, self esteem, social skills, teamwork and communication skills which prepares them for employment.

“We give opportunities to young people, not only on stage, but to the people who are interested in the backstage aspects of theatre.”

Steps celebrates its first birthday on January 25, which is the same day that young people are being invited to attend the first meeting.

Ash said: “Our first birthday will be a very special time for the people who have supported us from day one and to members returning for a second year.

“This year we are bigger, better and still as passionate about delivering a high-quality fun service for the young people of South Yorkshire.

“I would like to thank the general public for their support and belief in us and look forward to another successful year.”

The group raises its own funds for productions and has held cabaret evenings, a sponsored dance and a walk and also packed bags at supermarkets to boost funds.

Ash’s dad, Steve White, also did a 192-mile bike ride to Skegness and back dressed as Wonder Woman, raising more than £1,000 for Steps.

Ash said: “We have forged a great link with the local community which has given us a chance to broaden our target audience.”
