Tesco drivers call off strike action

TESCO drivers set to strike over a threat to 180 jobs have suspended industrial action.

Unite members based at the Doncaster distribution centre were set to walk out on Thursday and Friday after being served with 90-day notices of employment termination by bosses Eddie Stobart Ltd (ESL).

But they will now sit down together on Friday to discuss an offer from ESL who took over the workforce from Tesco in August.

Unite regional officer, Harriet Eisner said: “Stobart’s has confirmed it intends to put an offer on the table, so we are suspending Thursday and Friday’s action pending the talks.

“We are not ruling out further action but Unite is keen to explore what ESL is offering and that talks are conducted in a constructive and positive manner.”

The 180 Tesco drivers have already taken two days of strike action and protested outside the Mexborough High Street branch this week.

Just one month after the supermarket’s transport workforce was transferred, ESL issued notice of termination of employment, with no promise that the drivers will be re-employed once the 90-days are up.
