Team-mates celebrate life of Steve by donning AFP kit at funeral

MOURNING team-mates of a much-loved Sunday league soccer star donned the kit in which he scored a hatful of goals as they paid their last respects.

Fellow AFP players wore the team’s distinctive white shirts to the funeral of 34-year-old Steve Burns, who died earlier this month after three years battling motor neurone disease.

Steve, originally from Moorgate, spent several seasons leading the front line for AFP, and also notched a clutch of strikes for fans’ team Internet Millers.

The dad of two was a dedicated member of Rotherham Round Table and Rotherham CAMRA, even leading his family through home brewing at the family home in Sheffield during his final weeks.

The service was held at Hutcliffe Wood Cemetery in Sheffield on Friday, when a collection was made for St Luke’s Hospice.
