Teachers trained to inspire future business whizzkids

AN AWARD-winning project is coaching 170 teachers to develop entrepreneurial talent in primary school kids.

Rotherham Ready has developed the Inspire Initial Teacher Training workshop, which staff from Sheffield Hallam University have taken up.

They will learn about creating enterprising learning opportunities through the curriculum and integrating enterprise into lessons.

Project officer Catherine Brentnall said: “Children's attitudes and mindsets are formed at an early age.

“That’s why it’s vital that teachers help to develop their enterprise skills and understanding through the primary years.

“Enterprise should be an essential part of a 21st century education. The economy has been transformed by technology and globalisation and young people need to know that if they want to have a job in the future, they might have to employ themselves.”

Sitwell Infant teacher Kirsty Peart took part in a pilot Initial ITT worksop two years ago. She said: “It gave me confidence when applying for jobs.

“I’d gained a good understanding of an important aspect of children’s learning which I was passionate about and could talk about in detail.

“Enterprise education is a key feature of the curriculum within my school and I believe that being able to talk about the pilot programme in my interview helped secure my job.”
