Swede smell of success for Apprentice Matthew

Stagecoach Yorkshire’s Matthew Sanderson, who lives in Kimberworth, Rand is based at the firm’s Ecclesfield depot, was awarded first place in the year two category of Stagecoach's 12th annual Apprentice of the Year Awards.

Along with cash prizes, individual trophies and tools supplied by event sponsors, the top prize winner in each year group is given a trip to the Scania factory and training facility in Sweden.  

Matthew’s win at Stagecoach’s awards ceremony at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium follows on from last year when the 23-year-old took the second place spot as a first-year apprentice.

Clare Willis, deputy Stagecoach UK bus training and development manager (Engineering) said: “Each year our apprentices are getting better and better and, as the competition intensifies, the judging becomes very difficult.

“Our winners this year have all worked to an exceptionally high standard and they thoroughly deserve their awards.”

Dave Heptinstall, Stagecoach Yorkshire Engineering Director, said: “The Stagecoach apprentice scheme is recognised as one of the best in the bus industry so we are delighted to have such skilled and committed people like Matthew in our team.

“It is great to see his efforts and enthusiasm rewarded for a second year and we hope he enjoys his visit to Sweden where we're sure he will enhance his skills and knowledge even further.”
