Students outline Goldthorpe railway project plans

STUDENTS planning railway regeneration for Goldthorpe will outline their ideas at an exhibition over the coming two days.

The Goldthorpe Railway Cuttings project, run by architecture students at Sheffield University, plans to turn an eyesore former railway into a beauty spot.

Known locally as the “black hole of Goldthorpe”, the abandoned track has been plagued by litter and fly-tipped furniture.

But CCTV cameras and warning signs put up in recent months seem to have curbed the problem, community workers said.

The overhaul could include a nature reserve, outdoor gym or play area.

Students have been working with Bolton and Goldthorpe Big Local and Barnsley Council scheme Dearne Approach to canvas residents for their ideas with a series of public information sessions.

The best and most feasible of these will be on show at the Salvation Army Church, Straight Lane between 5pm and 8pm tomorrow and the same times on Wednesday.

Project spokeswoman Maha Komber said: “The purpose of this week’s event is for the Goldthorpe Railway Embankment group' to display the work we have produced as well as the art done by the children at our Pop-up fair and from Goldthorpe Primary School.

“It will be an opportunity for the community of Goldthorpe to engage and give their feedback on our proposals, as well as find out how they can be involved in the future.”
