Sterecycle staff axed as councils cancel waste contract

SEVENTY staff have been laid off at trouble-hit recycling firm Sterecycle as adminstrators try to keep the business going.

More than two thirds of the Templeborough plant’s 90 workers were made redundant as the plant was mothballed.

It came after the BDR waste partnership, which oversees processing of Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster’s rubbish, scrapped its contract with Sterecycle.

Joint administrator Guy Hollander said that he still hoped to find a buyer after there was interest from several prospective new owners.

Bids for the company have to be in by the end of tomorrow, with Mr Hollander and fellow administrator Mike Wellard, from accountancy firm Mazars, keen to seal a day by Friday.

Karl Battersby, Strategic Director for Environment and Development Services at Rotherham Borough Council, the lead authority for the interim waste contract said: "BDR has worked hard to support them throughout the term of the contract but unfortunately we had to cancel because the terms and conditions of the contract were not being met by Sterecycle."
