SNOW: Bus disruption but no school closures

BUS services in Rotherham have been affected by this morning’s snowy weather — but no schools have been closed.

There are disruptions to public transport across the town, with bus operators Stagecoach advising people to allow more time for their journey and check  www.stagecoachbus.com/yorkshire or follow @stagecoachyrks on Twitter for the latest updates.

Rotherham Borough Council said no school closures had been reported but Thomas Rotherham College, which was due to be open for exams, is shut.

Dinnington Comprehensive also announced that its post-16 open evening, scheduled for this evening, would be postponed.

Rudston School on Broom Road will close at 4pm to allow pupils to get home safely.

Meanwhile, the council's mobile library will not call at Whiston, although other stops will take place as normal.

The authority said its gritting crews have been working through the night to treat priority routes.

A spokeswoman said: “Hand salting teams will continue work today — clearing snow and ice from areas where people are most at risk; such as near to schools, sheltered housing and busier footways.

“The majority of grit bins have been refilled and teams will restock further where necessary.

“On-hire JCBs and registered farmers will be used to clear compacted snow/ice if needed.”

Gritters will also support bin collection teams.
