Sing the anthem and help restore national pride, says mum

A PATRIOTIC mum has started a campaign to make it compulsory for children across the UK to learn and sing the National Anthem in school.

Sally Wilkinson (27), from Bramley, said the idea behind the campaign was to restore some national pride and educate children.

The mother-of-two said: “I would like it if children of today’s generation just knew a little bit about Britain, we all share the same Queen no matter who or what you believe in.

“I am hoping schools could make it compulsory to be sung once a year, mainly to keep Britain British.”

Sally (pictured) said she was not a royalist and was not asking people to become royalists, but said she respected the Queen as she had been brought up to respect her elders.

“We have one Queen in England, you can believe in whichever God you like, but this is England’s Queen.”

Asked if she was worried if people would accuse her of being racist, Sally said: “That’s fine, if that’s their opinion they are entitled to it.

“I don’t want to upset anybody, but I think there are a lot of Gods that people believe in and there’s only one Queen of England, why not respect her?

“When I was a child, I remembered and respected what I learned at school.”

Sally said she had taught herself the words to the national anthem a few years ago after researching it on the Internet.

She set up the online petition on June 30, which has gained 18 signatures, a total Sally was disappointed with.

She added: “I was hoping for a bigger response.

“I’ll keep trying to take it further and go out on the streets of Rotherham and Sheffield to try and get some more signatures.

“I put it on Facebook, 50 people commented, 45 loved it and two said they wouldn’t sign it.”

Sally now aims to approach her local MPs, write to Downing Street and even contact the Queen herself to attract further support.

She added that she may look to set up the petition on Change.org to try and draw a bigger response.
