And at Herringthorpe Junior and Infants Schools, off Chatterton Drive, Herringthorpe, lessons had to be called off today after staff arrived at school to find their buildings were without water due to a frozen water main.

One member of staff from the school said: “It is frustrating after all the efforts that were made to clear the snow for the pupils to get in.

“We were able to open as usual on Monday and we expect to be open again tomorrow.”

Minor roads across the borough remained difficult to pass as this week got underway with temperatures of below -10 deg C giving little chance of a thaw.

The Met Office says temperatures will remain below zero all week.
