Scholarships boost for students

TWO students have received scholarships that will allow them to study for their chosen university degrees.

Jackey Chong and Katherine Henderson were awarded the scholarships after both submitting winning applications to Thomas Rotherham College’s Foundation Fund Committee.

Jackey, (18) said: “I was really happy when I discovered that I had won the scholarship.

“A few friends of mine had applied as well, and it was quite competitive.”

Jackey, of Barnsley Road, Highgate, is going to study Mathematics at Churchill College, Cambridge.

He is the winner of the Harold Bridges Memorial Scholarship for Physical Sciences and Mathematics.

The scholarship was donated by Mrs Shirley Bridges in memory of her husband, a former Rotherham student who went on to become the president of Shell.

Katherine (18), who is going to read Spanish and English Literature at Edinburgh won the Feoffees’ Scholarship for English and Languages.

The application process involved answering a variety of questions including, why they had decided to apply for the scholarship, and why each applicant had chosen their university degree.

TRC principal Dr Richard Williams said: “The scholarships are awarded on academic excellence, effort, commitment to the chosen university course and demonstrating how the scholarship will help in pursuing that course.

“As expected there were some excellent applications, and Katherine and Jackey won their awards in the face of strong competition.”
