Royal approval for Georgia

A TEENAGE cadet who gave first aid to a boy after a car crash was rewarded with a trip to Buckingham Palace.

Georgia Stockwell (17) helped the lad when she was first on the scene at Whiston as she travelled home from the London Marathon.

She and 85 other young achievers were invited to meet Princess Anne, the St John Ambulance patron, at the Young Achievers reception.

Georgia described how her life-saving knowledge was put to the test in April as she made her way home from helping runners with dehydration and cramp at the marathon.

“All those involved in the crash were out of their cars but walking around looking dazed,” she said. “Because we were first on the scene, I phoned an ambulance and the police.

“We had to establish who was hurt. One boy, about ten, was complaining his neck hurt, so I supported his head until the paramedics could put a brace on.

“His dad had gone off in the first ambulance so I comforted him. I also had to reassure an adult who was confused.

“The police said someone may have hit their head on a windscreen which was cracked, so even though people were walking, we needed to monitor them carefully.”

Georgia, a sixth former at Brinsworth Academy, added: “We were tired after the marathon, but the adrenaline kicked in and I got on with it.

“I think people without first aid knowledge might not have stopped in case they made things worse.”

Georgia, of Dewhill Avenue in Whiston, was recognised for her commitment to first aid, which she learned in three years with the St John Ambulance Rotherham and Enzor No 1 cadet unit.

Her dedication has seen her achieve senior cadet status in the unit, which means she helps teach life-saving skills to others.

St John Ambulance youth leader Rowena Clarkson said: “Georgia is a really pleasant and responsible young leader and has a great rapport with the young people in our unit. She’s definitely worthy of the title Young Achiever.”

Regional youth services manager Philip O’Donnell added: “The reception is a great way for us to recognise the commitment and outstanding work of these young people.

“Georgia has proved herself to be an outstanding individual and is well-deserving of this special opportunity to meet Her Royal Highness.”
