Rotherham woman flees Japanese radiation zone

A ROTHERHAM teacher who survived the devastation at the heart of the Japanese earthquake is fleeing the danger of radiation from damaged nuclear reactors.

Colette Bunker (24) said she had so far resisted warnings to leave her home in Sendai, 60 miles from the power station at Fukushima where engineers are battling to stop meltdown in the reactors.

Colette, who teaches English and French at a Japanese high school, said she was leaving the disaster zone for Kyoto where she would be able to stay with friends.

“The biggest concern for people is just getting out of the way of the radiation from Fukushima,” she said.

“I’ve been in touch with family and friends at home but I’m still happy to stay in Japan for the time being. I’ll only leave as a last resort.”

Colette is from Norrels Drive, Broom, where her family live.

They had a desperate struggle to contact her after the earthquake struck.
