AN ITALIAN restaurant which served alcohol without permission — culminating in a brawl in All Saints’ Square — has withdrawn its application for a licence.

Customers who had been drinking at La Orzo, on Doncaster Gate, were involved in a fight in which a man suffered serious head injuries, Rotherham Council said.

The venue had seen its licence suspended the previous month over a failure to pay the annual fee, RMBC’s licensing sub-committee was told.

It was said that the summer sessions had involved “considerable amounts of alcohol being consumed,” leading up to the All Saints’ Square fight last August.

RMBC licensing enforcement officer Lee Kerry said: “These events were being held without a licence and at this time it was unclear who was behind the organisation of the events.”

An application for a new licence was scheduled for last Wednesday but a council spokesperson said: “The applicant has withdrawn their application so the hearing is no longer required.”
