Rotherham braced for deluge

ROTHERHAM is braced for its wettest days of 2012, with flooding already blighting parts of the borough.

Met office officials have issued an amber flood warning across large parts of the UK and warned that a month’s rain could fall on certain areas within the next 24 hours.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said this morning that they have already had calls about floods are expecting a busy weekend.

A spokesman for the service said: “Last night we had calls from residents in Mexborough who were expressing concern about flooding in their street.

“We informed the local authority and also sent out an officer to see if we would have to send in our pumps but by the time he got there most of the water had cleared.

“Most of the rain we saw last night created flash flooding but we’re expecting it to be far more sustained over the weekend.”

The rain has event organisers in other parts of the borough in a spin.

Letwell Street Fair is already destined to take place in a large barn as plans to hold it in the street were seemingly scuppered by the downfalls.

One organiser stated: “It’s not looking good, but we’re lucky to have a plan B in place. The show will go on.”
