Roads toll down as emergency services spread South Yorks safety message

EMERGENCY services hailed a successful National Road Safety Day — with just three crashes on the county’s roads compared to an average of ten.

Fire crews visited supermarkets to spread the message on July 6, while police delivered a safety course at Lifewise and carried out speed enforcement operations.

Delroy Galloway, from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “While we’re happy to have made an impact on this important national day of action, our work to reduce collisions on our roads continues.

“One death on the roads is too many, so we’re asking drivers to continue listening to the advice and to help us make our roads safer for themselves and other road users.”

Pc Bruce Yacomeni, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Just one moment of inattention as a driver, motorcyclist or pedestrian can lead to life changing circumstances.

“Members of the Safer Roads Partnership work in a co-ordinated manner to reduce the numbers of people killed on the roads.”

The main safety messages are to keep a two second gap from the car in front and to not speed or drink and drive.
