River search unearths bag of clothes

POLICE officers have confirmed that a suspicious item spotted in the River Don was a bag of dumped clothes.

Under water search teams were called to the River Don after police received reports of a suspicious item in the water.

Police officers received the call at 10.50am today from a member of the public reporting the suspicious item in the river behind the Saul and Jackson car showroom off Marsh Street on the outskirts of the town centre.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the item pulled from the river was a bag of clothes.

She added: “Officers are now leaving the scene as the item turned out to be nothing."
