Report child abuse by text, urges NSPCC
The NSPCC launched its text service to drive “on the spot”reports of child abuse to its helpline in South Yorkshire and across the UK.

Hide AdThe text number—88858—is free and available 24 hours a day.
It comes after the charity revealed figures showing that 1,265 people from South Yorkshire called its helpline on helpline on 0808 800 5000 during 2009/10.
In an NSPCC poll, one in five people in Yorkshire and the Humber questioned said that they had been concerned a child was being abused or neglected.

Hide AdBut 46 per cent of those who did not report their fears immediately had taken no action later.
The poll also showed that over 70 per cent of people who had been concerned about a child had not acted immediately because they did not know what to do or who to call.
Some said they were worried about being overheard or did not want to speak to someone on the phone. Others feared retaliation or were anxious about making a mistake.

Hide AdBut the charity’s helpline ambassador and TV psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos said: “Procrastination can be fatal for an abused child. Tomorrow may be too late.
“Sending a text is quick and immediate, whether you're at home or out shopping.
“It’s good to know you've taken action.
“If you're worried about a child, the message is simple.
“Don’t delay, text the helpline today.”
A trained NSPCC counsellor will reply to a text message within three hours, and offer advice, information and assistance.

Hide AdThey may ask for additional information about the person’s concerns, or confirm that a referral has been made to the police or social services.
